A Short History of Lions Clubs International

In 1917, a young Chicago insurance man named Melvin Jones, who was a member of a wealthy businessman's club, convinced his fellow members that they should seek out a means to help the less fortunate in their community. This was the genesis of today's Lions Clubs International.

The Lions went international in 1920 with clubs joining from Canada and soon thereafter expanded to all parts of the globe.

At the Lions Clubs International Convention in Ohio in 1925, Helen Keller, the guest speaker, challenged Lions "...to become the knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness...". Since that time the main thrust of Lion endeavors has been to help those who are sight impaired.

Growing out of that challenge, the Lions' "White Cane" evolved. During 1991-94, the Lions' of the world participated in "Campaign SightFirst" in an effort to raise $140,000,000 to defeat reversible and preventable blindness. The Lion's met and exceeded their goal. This was the largest medical humanitarian effort in the history of the world.
